TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Yemen's Houthi group on Sunday claimed responsibility for eight drone attacks on Israel. The strike also hit Ramon Airport in southern Israel, injuring several people earlier in the day.
In a statement broadcasted by the Houthi-run al-Masirah TV, military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said the group launched "eight drones targeting the Negev, Eilat, Ashkelon, Ashdod, and Tel Aviv."
He mentioned that one drone hit Ramon Airport, forcing its closure and the suspension of air traffic, while other drones targeted sensitive military sites in various cities.
"We confirm the escalation of our military operations and will not back down from our position in support of Gaza," he said, as reported by Xinhua and quoted by Antara, while warning airlines to avoid Israeli airspace and airports.
An Israeli Airport Authority spokesperson confirmed earlier in the day that a Houthi drone hit the arrivals hall at Ramon Airport, a relatively small facility located about 18 kilometers north of Eilat.
Israel's Magen David Adom rescue service revealed that at least two people suffered minor injuries and were promptly evacuated to the nearest resort city hospital, Eilat. Some Israeli media reported that the number of injuries reached eight.
The Houthi group, which controls most of the northern regions of Yemen, has been targeting Israel since November 2023 as a show of solidarity with the Palestinian residents in Gaza.
Israel has responded with regular retaliatory strikes, including an airstrike last month in Sanaa that killed 12 Houthi leaders.
