TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Kingdom is reportedly set to formally recognize the state of Palestine this weekend, following the conclusion of U.S. President Donald Trump's state visit.
According to a report from Anadolu, this decision was previously postponed to avoid escalating tensions with Washington. Both Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have publicly voiced their full support for Israel's ongoing actions in Gaza.
Trump's Visit to Britain
On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Britain hosted a private state visit for Donald Trump, which included an official dinner at Windsor Castle.
This visit coincided with critical trade negotiations between the United States and its major international partners, including the UK. During this time, the two nations were expected to announce several agreements in technology and civil nuclear energy, while the British government aimed to secure billions of dollars in American investment.
The UK's Stance on Palestine
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has indicated since July that the UK would recognize Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. However, this action was conditional on Israel taking "substantive steps" to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza and agreeing to a ceasefire.
A spokesperson for the prime minister emphasized that this decision is intended to safeguard the two-state solution. "Statehood is the inalienable right of the Palestinian people, and it is absolutely critical in protecting the viability of a two-state solution that we make clear that inalienable right," he stated.
In a government statement after an emergency cabinet meeting, Starmer explained that the decision was made because the situation in Gaza is untenable and the prospects for a two-state solution are diminishing. "It’s done now because I am particularly concerned that the very idea of a two-state solution is reducing, and it feels further way today than it has for many years," he said.
According to Al Jazeera, this shift has been influenced by significant public pressure on Starmer's Labour Party, amid widespread international criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza, which some experts and human rights organizations have described as genocidal.
Last year, Ireland, Norway, and Spain joined 147 other countries in recognizing Palestine. French President Emmanuel Macron has also stated that France intends to take the same step at the UN General Assembly, making it the first G7 nation to do so.
