TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representatives' (DPR) Commission II has canceled all overseas work trips slated for this year, after lawmakers' allowances sparked an ongoing wave of protests across the country.
The chair of House Commission II, Rifqinizamy Karsayuda, confirmed this during the commission's meeting at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. He said, "We have canceled all previously scheduled overseas trips for the DPR Commission II," said the NasDem Party politician.
The canceled trip aligns with President Prabowo and house leadership's directive, he said, adding that Commission II is committed to formulating an effective and efficient budget.
The excess budget from the canceled overseas working visit will be returned to the state treasury. "Hopefully, the fund can be allocated to more citizen-oriented and pro-people programs," the lawmaker said.
Prabowo Offers Concessions Amid Protests
President Prabowo Subianto previously announced that all political parties in the DPR agreed to revoke some policies, including the size of lawmakers' allowances, and impose a moratorium on overseas work trips.
This statement was made by the head of state and the legislative leaders after a meeting at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Sunday, August 31, 2025.
Prabowo also said party leaders are taking firm action against House members who make inaccurate statements.
Chair of the National Awakening Party (PKB), Muhaimin Iskandar, declared that his party agreed to evaluate the DPR's housing allowance that sparked week-long protests in various cities in Indonesia. The Coordinating Minister for Social Empowerment said the massive wave of protests became a momentum for the government to evaluate and reform, including listening to public aspirations.
Echoing the statement, the Deputy Chair of the Democratic Party, Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono, said his party has agreed to evaluate the demands to revoke the DPR housing allowance.
The Gerindra Party and Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) factions had earlier stated that they would revoke various DPR allowances. Chair of the Gerindra Party faction in the DPR, Budisatrio Djiwandono, said the public demands were heard, especially regarding the allowances.
Meanwhile, the PDIP faction requested that the housing allowances for DPR members and other facilities that were beyond reasonable limits be stopped. Chair of the PDIP Central Board said that the PDIP faction in the DPR sees politics not only as rationality and agreements, but must extend to ethics, empathy, and sympathy.
