TEMPO.COJakarta - The Ministry of Education, for Elementary and Secondary Education, is preparing a special allowance for 16,500 teachers impacted by the Sumatra disaster. The ministry will allocate Rp35 billion for this special allowance intended for these thousands of educators.

Minister of Elementary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, stated that the funds are a result of reallocation from the 2025 budget ceiling. "Then for each to receive assistance of Rp2 million per teacher, and the budget is still in the process of 2025 revision," Mu'ti said during the Full Cabinet Plenary Session at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, on Monday, December 15, 2025.

The number of 16,500 teachers represents only half of the total affected teachers, which is 25,936 educators. In addition, 275,248 students were also impacted by this tragedy.

Simplified Learning Curriculum

For students, Mu'ti conveyed that his ministry is designing several learning scenarios so that students can still receive their right to education despite the disaster. During the emergency response phase, lasting 0 to 3 months, the curriculum is simplified to focus on essential competencies covering basic literacy and numeracy, health and personal safety, psychosocial support, and disaster mitigation education.

Next, during the early recovery phase, spanning 3 to 12 months, the curriculum used will be crisis-based adaptive learning. Following that stage, flexible and differentiated learning will be implemented. The fourth phase is the transition assessment period, which uses a portfolio-based assessment or a simple work evaluation.

"Then, continued recovery for 1 to 3 years includes permanent integration of disaster education, strengthening the quality of learning, resilience-based inclusive learning, and an emergency education monitoring and evaluation system," Mu'ti said.

Furthermore, the ecological disaster that claimed thousands of lives also damaged much of the school infrastructure. As of Sunday, December 14, 2025, the Ministry of Elementary and Secondary Education recorded a total of 3,274 damaged school buildings. This figure includes 767 early childhood education (PAUD) units, 1,343 primary schools, 621 junior high schools, 268 senior high schools, 236 vocational high schools, 23 community learning activity centers or PKBMs, 30 special needs schools, and 86 course and training institutions.

Mu'ti stated that the total number of damaged classrooms reached 6,431 rooms, while another 3,489 were partially damaged. He mentioned that the flood also damaged various other learning facilities, such as equipment in laboratories, libraries, and places of worship. Even the Interactive Flat Panel screens distributed by the President two months ago were also destroyed in this disaster.
