TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two pickleball courts on the fourth floor of an office building in the Kemang area of South Jakarta were buzzing on Thursday night, December 11, 2025. Dozens of people took turns playing the game, which blends elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. That evening, the pickleball courts were fully booked, completely reserved by customers.

Among those playing was Dimas Hanggoro, 51. A private-sector employee who works in South Jakarta, he tried pickleball in March 2025 and now plays regularly twice a week. At first, he used a borrowed racket. Now Dimas owns three rackets from well-known brands. “Each costs about US$300,” he told Tempo. In rupiah terms, that comes to around Rp4.9 million per racket.

According to Dimas, the cost of playing pickleball is relatively low. Players who do not have a racket can rent one from the court operator. Split per person, 10 players chip in Rp85,000 (US$5) each to rent two courts for three hours. They also pool money to buy six pickleball balls for Rp180,000 (US$11), which can be used for about a month. Beyond being affordable, Dimas said, pickleball has become a social gathering. “People used to meet at cafés. Now it’s better to do it while exercising,” he said.

Pickleball began to gain recognition in Indonesia in 2019. One of those who popularized it was Susilo, a lecturer at the Faculty of Sports Science and Health at Jakarta State University. Speaking to Tempo, Susilo, who is now the Secretary-General of the Indonesia Pickleball Federation, said the sport has spread to the Bogor-Depok-Tangerang-Bekasi area and other major cities in West Java.
