TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has decided to make a foreign visit to Beijing, China, after previously canceling it due to a wave of domestic demonstrations last week.

Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi stated that the head of state flew to Beijing on Tuesday evening, September 2, 2025, to attend an invitation from President Xi Jinping. He was originally scheduled to arrive on August 31, 2025. "However, due to domestic dynamics, President Prabowo decided to postpone his departure," Prasetyo said in a video statement on September 2, 2025.

Prasetyo explained that the reason the President went ahead with the visit was because there was a strong request from the Chinese government for Prabowo to attend, at least for one day to attend the Chinese military parade.

"However, in making his decision, the President certainly took into account everything related to the dynamics in the country," Prasetyo said.

Prasetyo explained that the head of state had monitored the situation before leaving for China. Prabowo received reports from his staff that public life was gradually returning to normal, which led to Prabowo's decision to visit China, even if only for one day.

Prabowo is scheduled to meet with world leaders in Beijing. While in Beijing, Prasetyo said, the President will discuss bilateral relations with China during the visit. "He will return to Indonesia the following evening (September 3, 2025)," he said.

Previously, the Presidential Palace announced that President Prabowo had canceled his overseas visit to China to attend the military parade on September 3, 2025. Prasetyo explained that the reason for canceling the overseas visit to China was because the President wanted to continue to directly monitor and quell massive demonstrations domestically.

President Prabowo is one of 26 heads of state and government invited by Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend the military parade in Beijing on September 3, 2025. The military parade aims to commemorate the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese people's war against Japanese aggression and the anti-fascist world war.

The parade in Beijing will showcase a series of new-generation Chinese weaponry, such as fourth-generation tanks and aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and advanced missiles, including hypersonic anti-ship missiles. Most of the Chinese weaponry will make its public debut.
