TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Java's highest mountain, Mount Semeru, has been observing a more frequent eruption lately. The latest occurred on Monday, September 8, 2025, at 7:20 a.m., which spewed volcanic ash up to 600 meters above the summit.
"This eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 21 mm and a duration of 177 seconds," said one of the officers at the Semeru Volcano Observation Post, Sigit Rian Alfian, in his report to the Geological Agency.
As of Monday morning, the 3,676-meter-high mountain above sea level has erupted eight times, at 12:27 a.m., 12:31 a.m., 01:23 a.m., 01:32 a.m., 04:52 a.m., 05:43 a.m., 05:59 a.m., and 07:20 a.m.
During the eruption that occurred at 05:59 a.m., the ash column reached 800 meters above the crater, while the previous eruption emitted 700-meter-high volcanic ash. "The observed ash column is a south-leaning grayish white with moderate intensity," he said.
42 Eruptions in a Week
Over the past week, the volcano, which crosses Lumajang Regency and Malang Regency, East Java, has erupted 42 times. Semeru has become the most active volcano in Indonesia, with the highest number of eruptions since January 2025, reaching 2,407 times.
The Geological Agency has set Mount Semeru at Alert Level II, with residents and tourists barred from entering within an 8-kilometer radius from the crater.
"Beyond that distance, people are not allowed to engage in activities within 500 meters from the river banks along Besuk Kobokan, as they are prone to pyroclastic flow expansion and lava flow up to 13 kilometers from the mountain peak," said Sigit.
Additionally, people are also prohibited from climbing or approaching the summit of Mount Semeru within a 3-kilometer radius due to the potential danger of pyroclastic rock projectiles.
