Trump Claims Netanyahu, Not U.S., Decides to Strike Qatar

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the attack on Qatar was decided by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, not Washington.

"This was a decision made by Prime Minister Netanyahu, it was not a decision made by me," Trump wrote on the U.S. social media platform, Truth Social, as quoted by Anadolu.

"I immediately directed Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to inform the Qataris of the impending attack, which he did. However, unfortunately, too late to stop the attack," claimed Trump.

This came after the Qatari Foreign Ministry denied the White House's claim that the Gulf state had been informed before the Israeli attack. Doha affirmed that communication from a U.S. official only occurred when the explosion was taking place.

Trump said he spoke with Netanyahu after the attack, and the Israeli leader claimed to him that he wanted to "make peace."

He also said he called the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and assured him that a similar incident would not happen again on Qatari soil.

"Unilaterally bombing inside Qatar, a Sovereign Nation and close Ally of the United States, that is working very hard and bravely taking risks with us to broker Peace, does not advance Israel or America’s goals," wrote Trump, reiterating an earlier statement from White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt in a press conference.

Trump said he had instructed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to finalize a defense cooperation agreement with Qatar.

Then on the same day, while speaking to reporters at a dinner in Washington, DC with Cabinet members, Trump said, "We are not thrilled about the whole situation."

"It's not a good situation, but I will say this: we want the hostages back, but we are not thrilled about the way that went down today," he said.

The Israeli military confirmed it had carried out a "precise strike targeting the senior leadership" of the Palestinian group Hamas in the capital of Doha.

Qatar strongly condemned the attack as a "blatant violation of international law" and a threat to its sovereignty and security.

The Gulf state, along with Egypt and the U.S., has led mediation efforts between Israel and Hamas to reach a ceasefire agreement.

Hamas leaders survived the Israeli airstrike despite six reported deaths, a senior leader of the group confirmed on Tuesday.

Suhail al-Hindi, a member of Hamas's political bureau, told Al Jazeera that Hamas leaders survived a "cowardly assassination attempt."

He said Hammam al-Hayya, the son of Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya, and his office director, Jihad Lubad, were killed in the attack along with some of their aides.

According to al-Hindi, the attack took place during a meeting of the group's negotiation team to discuss the U.S.-proposed ceasefire in Gaza.

He added that Hamas leaders Khalil al-Hayya and Zaher Jabarin were among those who survived the attack unharmed.

Al-Hindi stressed that Hamas holds Israel and the U.S. responsible for the attack in the Qatari capital.

Israel has killed more than 64,600 Palestinian residents in a brutal attack in Gaza following a cross-border attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023. The genocide has devastated the region, which is facing famine.

Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its war in the region.
