TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has stated that the Total Lunar Eclipse tonight, Sunday, September 7, 2025, can be observed from Indonesia. This phenomenon only occurs during the full moon phase.
"At the peak of the eclipse, the moon will appear red if the weather is clear," explained the BMKG in an official statement on Sunday morning.
The Total Lunar Eclipse occurs when the position of the Sun-Earth-Moon is aligned in a straight line. The Moon enters the Earth's umbra shadow.
The red color at the peak of the eclipse is caused by the scattering of sunlight, known as Rayleigh scattering, in Earth's atmosphere. At that time, short-wave light such as blue is scattered more, while red light passes through and reaches the surface of the moon.
BMKG notes that the duration of this eclipse, from the beginning phase (P1) to the end (P4), will last for 5 hours 29 minutes 48 seconds. The partiality of the eclipse, from the start of Partial Eclipse (U1) to the end (U4), will last for 3 hours 20 minutes 2 seconds. Meanwhile, the total duration will last for 1 hour 22 minutes 56 seconds.
Referring to the visibility map displayed by the BMKG, areas to the west of the P4 line can witness the entire eclipse phases, from Penumbra Eclipse (P1), Partial Eclipse (U1), Total Eclipse (U2), the eclipse peak, to the end at P4. Observers to the east of the P4 line, such as the eastern part of Papua, will see the eclipse from the penumbra phase to U4. However, the moon will set before the penumbra phase ends.
There are at least four eclipse phenomena visible throughout 2025, consisting of two lunar eclipses and two solar eclipses. Besides the eclipse on September 7, there will also be a Total Lunar Eclipse on March 14. The Partial Solar Eclipse that occurred on March 29 will recur on September 21, 2025, but both cannot be observed from Indonesia.
