TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Workers seeking a blend of productivity and recreation have a new top destination. According to the 2025 Work from Anywhere Capitals Barometer by the International Workplace Group (IWG), Tokyo has been named the best city for a "workcation," surpassing Rio de Janeiro and Budapest.
In its third annual report, IWG gave Tokyo the top score of 91 out of 120. The Japanese capital earned its spot due to its reliable internet, strong transportation infrastructure, and safety. Additionally, Japan's recent launch of a digital nomad visa allows for a competitive 12-month stay.
Tokyo's appeal is also its access to diverse natural landscapes, including mountains, coastlines, and national parks, making it an ideal choice for hybrid workers who want a city atmosphere close to nature.
"For many, the days of long daily commutes are over, and there is more freedom to work in new locations," said IWG Founder and CEO Mark Dixon as reported by Hospitality Net on Thursday, August 7, 2025..
Other cities are also rising in the ranks. Newcomers like Seoul stand out for their strong broadband, efficient transportation, and easier access to digital nomad visas.
Rome is another new entry, known for its extraordinary cuisine and rich history, now further boosted by the introduction of a digital nomad visa in January 2025. In Southeast Asia, Singapore ranks 15th globally, followed by Jakarta, Manila, and Hong Kong.
The IWG report also highlights a global trend: 60% of hybrid workers are more likely to extend their holidays to work remotely, and 86% consider the availability of flexible workspaces a key factor when choosing a destination.
Here are the top 10 cities for workcations, according to the 2025 Work from Anywhere Capitals Barometer:
1. Tokyo, Japan
2. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
3. Budapest, Hungary
4. Seoul, South Korea
5. Barcelona, Spain
6. Beijing, China
7. Lisbon, Portugal
8. Rome, Italy
9. Paris, France
10. Valletta, Malta
