The following is the list of the top 3 news on Tempo English today:
1. Police in Indonesia Claim to Step Up Cyber Surveillance Ahead of Week-Long Protests
Indonesia's National Police Headquarters (Mabes Polri) claimed to have been conducting cyber patrols since August 23, 2025, as a preventive measure to prevent riots in Jakarta and other areas following plans for demonstrations in front of the House of Representatives (DPR).
"Cyber patrols have been conducting activities since the 23rd, we have been monitoring the tools on social media to see if they would have an offline impact. Therefore, this has become a preemptive and preventive activity that we have carried out," said the Director of Cyber Crime at the National Police Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim Polri), Brigadier General Himawan Bayu Aji, at the Bareskrim Polri building on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
The week-long wave of demonstrations took place in Jakarta and then spread to many regions from August 25 to August 31, 2025.
The public took to the streets to protest the allowances and performance of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR).
2. How Did Yogyakarta Hotels' Occupancy Rise Amid Widespread Unrest?
The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) has reported a notable surge in hotel occupancy during the recent wave of protests across various regions from late August to early September 2025.
Occupancy rates have climbed to an average of 40 percent, despite this period being considered low season. Yogyakarta, although affected by mass protests, including the burning of the DIY Police Headquarters and the alleged death of a student from Amikom University, still attracted a significant number of visitors.
So, why did Yogyakarta hotels see this unexpected surge?
3. Indonesia's National Museum Temporarily Closed for Security After Nearby Protests
The Indonesian National Museum in Jakarta has been temporarily closed to the public since September 1, 2025. The museum's management announced the closure as a preemptive measure to ensure the safety of its collections and premises amid widespread demonstrations.
According to M. Rosyid Ridlo, the head of the museum, the closure allows for stricter security and supervision of all collections.
"We are tightening the supervision and security procedures to ensure that all cultural heritage under our management remains protected, and at the same time, to prepare for a more optimal service when we reopen," said Ridlo on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
The National Museum is one of the oldest and largest cultural institutions in Indonesia, housing over 140,000 historical items, including ancient manuscripts, classical sculptures, and ethnographic objects.
