TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Dozens of teachers held a sit-in at a cultural center in Madrid on Tuesday, demanding that the Spanish government impose an arms embargo on Israel, according to local media reports by El Diario as cited by Anadolu.

The protest at the Circulo de Bellas Artes center, organized by the collective Greater Palestine: Education against Genocide, began with a teachers' assembly and turned into a sit-in.

"We're not going to move from here," said Carlos Diez, a 63-year-old secondary school teacher and member of the initiative, who gathered about 60 educators and several cultural figures.

The group urged Spain's Cabinet to approve a long-announced decree to halt the sale of weapons to Israel.

The initiative aims to mobilize the education community to support Palestine amid the ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip.

The movement also plans to push education boards across Spain to issue statements supporting the arms embargo and to demand the cessation of diplomatic and trade relations with Israel.

The group announced similar sit-ins in other cities and stated that they would hold a public reading of the names of more than 18,500 children who died in the Gaza Strip.

660,000 Gaza Children Unable to Return to School

More than 660,000 children in the Gaza Strip have missed out on school over the past three years, as almost all infrastructure has been destroyed in the Israeli onslaught. This was revealed by the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, on Monday.

Gaza is in ruins. So is its education system. The Israeli Forces have destroyed or damaged most schools & education facilities in Gaza. Today, instead of going back to school, like most children around the world, around 660,000 girls and boys in Gaza will be sifting through the rubble – desperate, hungry, traumatised and mostly bereaved," he said at X.

Lazzarini once again called for a ceasefire in the region, stating that it is the only way forward "to reverse the famine & the “Scholasticide” hitting the children of Gaza."

"The longer they stay out of school with their trauma, the higher the risk they become a lost generation, sowing the seeds for more hatred & violence."

Since October 2023, Israel has killed over 63,600 Palestinian residents in Gaza. The genocidal war has devastated most of the enclave, which is now facing a famine.

Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense chief Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case in the International Court regarding the war it waged in Gaza.
