TEMPO.COJakarta - Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa announced that the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has submitted a budget proposal totaling Rp1.6 trillion to construct temporary and permanent shelters for victims of the recent Sumatra disaster. The Minister also noted that an additional Rp1.3 trillion is earmarked for allocation next year.

"The BNPB has submitted a request for an additional Rp1.6 trillion. There is still another Rp1.3 trillion needed for next year," Purbaya stated at the Presidential Palace Complex in Central Jakarta on Monday, December 15, 2025.

He confirmed that the Ministry of Finance has secured the necessary funds for the construction. The Ministry is currently waiting for the BNPB to finalize the comprehensive housing development program. "Next year's funds are ready, the money is available; they just need to create the program," he said.

Purbaya believes that the investment in housing development will contribute to economic growth. He suggested that the large-scale construction of housing and other necessary facilities in the disaster-stricken areas will stimulate greater economic growth.

President Prabowo Subianto had earlier told his ministers to quickly finish building temporary and permanent homes for the people affected by the disaster in Sumatra. Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said that Prabowo made this request during a meeting with several ministers of the Red and White Cabinet at his private home in Hambalang, Bogor, on Sunday, December 14, 2025.

Head of BNPB, Suharyanto, previously mentioned that the Indonesian National Army and the National Police will build the temporary homes for the victims. These 36-square-meter shelters will cost Rp 30 million and can be completed within six months. Meanwhile, permanent homes will be built with a budget of Rp60 million each.

President Prabowo Subianto showed that he is ready to temporarily cancel land use permits (HGU) for the building of these houses. "If needed, HGU permits can be temporarily canceled or reduced. This is a matter of the people's interest. Land must be available," he said during a meeting with several ministers and agencies in Aceh, on Sunday, December 7, 2025.
