TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s top weightlifter, Rizki Juniansyah, won gold at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, capping his performance by breaking the world record in the clean and jerk.
The 22-year-old lifted 205 kilograms in the clean and jerk and posted a combined total of 365 kilograms, surpassing the previous world record of 363 kilograms.
“I feel emotional and proud, but this is not the end goal,” Rizki said in a written statement on Monday, December 15, 2025.
“My main target is the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. These SEA Games are a stepping stone toward bigger championships so I can continue improving.”
Rizki dominated the competition from the outset. He opened with a 160-kilogram lift in the snatch, then delivered his strongest performance in the clean and jerk, where he successfully hoisted 205 kilograms to set a new world record.
His total lift secured him the gold medal, well ahead of his rivals. Malaysia’s Muhammad Erry Hidayat finished second with a total of 336 kilograms, while Thailand’s Natthawut Suepsuan placed third with 335 kilograms.
Rizki said the record-breaking performance was the result of a carefully planned strategy with his coach. He initially aimed to challenge the world record in the snatch but was advised to conserve energy for the clean and jerk.
“I wanted to go for the record in the snatch, but my coach told me to hold back,” said the 2024 Paris Olympic gold medalist.
“The focus was on maximizing power in the clean and jerk. Staying at 160 kilograms in the snatch allowed me to be more relaxed for the final lift.”
He emphasized that both mental and physical preparation were crucial, including proper rest and nutrition ahead of competition. Rizki also expressed gratitude for the support he received.
“I wanted to show that my training results are real,” he said. “My family, officials from the Indonesian Weightlifting Association, and the entire Indonesian team were watching. I am thankful for their prayers.”
Rizki’s gold medal and world record are expected to boost Indonesia’s standing in weightlifting and reinforce the country’s reputation as a leading force in the sport in Southeast Asia and beyond.
