TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The movie Sore: Istri dari Masa Depan, directed by Yandy Laurens, has been chosen to represent Indonesia at the 2026 Academy Awards. Production house Cerita Films shared the news on their Instagram account on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.
"The movie Sore: Istri dari Masa Depan has been selected as the Indonesian representative for the Best International Feature Film Oscar 2026," Cerita Films wrote in the post.
A Box Office Success
The film, which stars Sheila Dara Aisha and Dion Wiyoko, had already attracted more than three million viewers by the middle of last month. Cerita Films, a production company founded by Yandy Laurens and Suryana Paramita in 2018, expressed its gratitude for the film's unexpected success and its selection for the Academy Awards.
"Thank you to the Indonesian Oscar Selection Committee for choosing the movie Sore as Indonesia's representative in the Academy Awards," the production house wrote.
Sore: Istri dari Masa Depan marks Yandy Laurens's first romantic feature film project. The screenplay was written in 2016, shortly after he graduated from film school. The film is an adaptation of a 2017 web series of the same name.
According to Yandy, the idea for the film was inspired by his own experience of building a relationship with his wife. “Every day, I feel how we live and grow as a couple, and acceptance. So, I poured that keyword ‘acceptance’ into this film,” he said during a press conference last May.

The film tells the complex story of Jonathan, a photographer who neglects his health, and Sore, his patient and affectionate wife. In an effort to save her husband, Sore embarks on an unusual journey back to the past with the mission of changing Jonathan's destiny.
Set in a beautiful small town in Croatia, Sore: Istri dari Masa Depan is a profound reflection on life, death, and second chances. Sore arrives with knowledge no one else possesses; she knows everything about Jonathan’s life, including when his time will run out.
Sore’s sudden appearance in the past surprises Jonathan. She claims to be his wife from the future, a difficult claim to believe. However, Jonathan begins to realize that Sore’s arrival is not without reason. She struggles to change his messy lifestyle and habits before it is too late.
Along her journey, Sore gradually reveals secrets about the future, slowly shaking Jonathan’s beliefs. Yet, her mission is not without its obstacles.
