TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Spread across three hectares, a field in the hills of Selopamioro village, Imogiri subdistrict, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta, lies covered with nets to trap pests. On the land located directly behind the Yogyakarta Police School (SPN), corn shoots are beginning to emerge from the soil. Among the corn plants stand cassava trees and peanut crops.

Nardi, head of Nogosari Hamlet in Selopamioro village said the police installed traps to fend off raids by long-tailed macaques on the cornfields. "Monkey attacks on cornfields have become massive over the past three years," he said in Bantul on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.

Nardi recounted that a troop of long-tailed macaques inhabiting the Imogiri Community Forest invaded the police-owned cornfield late last year. They devoured almost all the corn ready for harvest, leaving only about one hectare. "When weighed, the corn harvest totaled only 10 tons," Nardi said.

The corn ravaged by the macaques was planted by police personnel. According to Nardi, members of the Police corps have been farming since mid-last year. Police also invited local farmers to help plant corn seeds on the terraced land, which farmers and residents had cultivated before the police began using it for corn farming.
