TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Research and Development (R&D) and new manufacturing center of Nokia in Oulu, Finland, will strengthen the company's role in the development of the next-generation 5G and 6G networks. The facility, dubbed as the 'Home of Radio,' brings together researchers, engineers, and production processes in one location. They are focusing on developing AI-based connectivity.
The research campus, inaugurated on September 5, 2025, will accommodate around 3,000 experts. Nokia's management stated that the facility covers the entire product development cycle, from initial testing and chip design to hardware, software, and patent development.
The same research center will also support the standardization of 5G and the development of system-on-chip. The on-site factory will produce 5G radio and baseband products to ensure secure networks are built in Europe.
"Oulu has a unique ecosystem that integrates Nokia’s R&D and smart manufacturing with an ecosystem of partners—including universities, start-ups, and NATO’s DIANA test center," said Nokia's Chief Executive Justin Hotard, as quoted by Gizmochina on Sunday, September 7, 2025.
He added that the objective of this campus is to create an environment where new ideas in wireless technology can move quickly from concept to implementation. The facility also implements sustainable principles. The entire campus operations use renewable energy, and surplus energy will be used to heat approximately 20,000 households in Oulu.
According to Nokia, these principles are part of the effort to integrate advanced innovation with environmentally friendly practices. By offering a simulated and real network environment, this campus is expected to give Nokia an edge in adapting 5G and 6G systems for AI applications. Another goal is to assert Europe's push for technological sovereignty amidst the increasing need for connectivity in AI development.
