TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Indonesian citizens in Nepal remain safe amid escalating anti-government unrest in the Himalayan nation.

Judha Nugraha, Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the ministry, said his office is in close coordination with the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka, which is accredited to Nepal, the Honorary Consul in Nepal, and local focal points to monitor their condition.

"So far, we have not received any reports of Indonesian citizens becoming victims of the unrest," Judha said on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, as quoted by Antara.

He urged Indonesian citizens currently visiting or traveling in Nepal to immediately report their whereabouts to the hotlines of the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka.

According to embassy records, 57 Indonesian citizens are residing in Nepal. In addition, there are 43 members of Indonesian delegations attending international conferences in Kathmandu, two Indonesian military personnel undergoing training, and 23 Indonesian tourists in the country.

Judha said the embassy has issued advisories for Indonesians to remain vigilant, avoid large crowds, and closely monitor local security updates.

The unrest in Nepal erupted after the government blocked access to popular social media platforms, citing non-compliance with new registration rules. The move triggered widespread anger among citizens, already frustrated by corruption and unpopular policies.

The protests, led largely by Generation Z youth, quickly escalated into riots and looting on Monday, September 8. At least 19 people were killed after being shot by security forces, while hundreds were injured.

Demonstrators stormed government buildings, party offices, and even set fire to the parliament building and the residences of senior officials, including the Presidential Office.

In the aftermath, Prime Minister Sharma Oli tendered his resignation to President Ram Chandra Paudel, who is now preparing for the formation of a new government.
