TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Special Staff to ex-minister Nadiem Makarim, Fiona Handayani, remained silent after being questioned for 12 hours by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). She was questioned in an investigation into alleged corruption in the Google Cloud procurement process at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek).
According to Tempo's monitoring, Fiona arrived at the KPK's Red and White Building in South Jakarta at 9:15 a.m. Western Indonesian Time and only emerged from the questioning room on the second floor of the anti-graft agency building at 9:15 p.m. Western Indonesian Time. She arrived wearing batik and carrying a brown backpack.
As she left the KPK building, she only smiled at the media crew. She did not answer any questions from reporters until she entered her white Toyota Avanza. "Thank you," Fiona said as she was about to enter the car that picked her up in front of the KPK building on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo said investigators at his institution needed information from Fiona. The former special staff member from Nadiem Makarim made the statement during the investigation into alleged corruption in the Google Cloud procurement at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. "The investigation is still ongoing," he said at his office in South Jakarta on Tuesday afternoon.
Fiona underwent questioning in the same case on July 30, 2025. She was questioned by KPK investigators for eight hours. Fiona also chose not to comment after the questioning.
Two alleged corruption cases at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology are being investigated by two legal institutions. The first concerns the corruption in the Chromebook procurement process, which is being handled by the Attorney General's Office. The second concerns the Google Cloud procurement process, which is being handled by the KPK.
"Regarding Google Cloud, is it the same as the Chromebook case currently being handled by the Attorney General's Office? The answer is different," said Asep Guntur Rahayu, Acting Deputy for Enforcement and Execution at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), as reported by Antara on Friday, July 25, 2025.
Asep explained that the Chromebook case relates to hardware procurement, while the KPK will focus on software procurement, specifically Google Cloud. However, he said the KPK will continue to communicate with the AGO.
"We have of course also communicated with the Attorney General's Office regarding the handling of this case, as this will be a different matter. However, this is a package that cannot be separated between hardware and software," he said.
In the alleged corruption in the procurement of Chromebooks, the Attorney General's Office has named four suspects in the case, namely the former Special Staff of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology under Nadiem Makarim, named Jurist Tan, former technology consultant at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Ibrahim Arief, Director of Elementary Schools at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology for 2020–2021 Sri Wahyuningsih, and Director of Junior High Schools at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology for 2020–2021 Mulyatsyah.
