TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono asked the government of Peru to thoroughly investigate the murder of Zetro Leonardo Purba, an Indonesian diplomat, at the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Lima, on Monday evening local time.
“We have asked the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the police to thoroughly investigate this case,” Sugiono said in a statement posted on his Instagram account, @menluri, in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, as reported by Antara.
He said that he had communicated directly with Ricky Suhendar, the Indonesian ambassador to Peru, and the deceased's wife regarding Zetro's death.
Sugiono then instructed Ambassador Ricky to continue monitoring the Peruvian government's and police's investigation into the death of an Indonesian Embassy staff member in Lima.
The Indonesian Foreign Minister also asked Ambassador Ricky to help return the deceased to Indonesia.
"I hope we can do our best to see this case through to the end," he said.
He also asked his colleagues at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be patient and resilient in the face of sad news. He reminded them to prioritize their safety while on duty.
"Wherever you are, one thing is certain: we must always prioritize safety as we carry out our duties and responsibilities to the nation and state," said the Indonesian Foreign Minister.
Zetro Leonardo Purba, the young chancellery administrator at the Indonesian embassy in Lima, was reported dead after being shot in Lima on Monday evening, local time.
According to local media reports, a staff member of the Indonesian Embassy died after being shot three times by an unknown assailant a few meters from his residence in the Lince area of Lima.
According to local police, Zetro arrived in Peru only five months ago. Previously, he served at the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Melbourne.
Local police and forensic teams conducted a crime scene investigation. The Indonesian Embassy in Lima has coordinated with the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the incident.
