TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chairperson of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM), Anis Hidayah, has called on the state, particularly the police, to take responsibility for the death of Andika Lutfi Falah, a 16-year-old student from Tangerang who died after joining a demonstration on Friday, August 29, 2025.
Andika passed away at AL Mintohardjo Hospital, Jakarta, on Monday, September 1, after three days in a coma.
"The state must be held accountable, and that is what we will continue to push for," Anis told Tempo on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
She stressed that the police must investigate possible procedural violations by their personnel in handling the protests, especially when they result in fatalities.
"His death is strongly suspected to be linked to acts of violence, and this must be proven through the collection of evidence and a thorough investigation by law enforcement," Anis added.
Andika, an 11th-grade student at SMK Negeri 14 Kabupaten Tangerang, reportedly sustained severe head injuries during the protest.
According to the Street Paramedics Coalition, he had been unconscious in the ICU since Friday before succumbing to his injuries. "He had been lying in the ICU for three days," said Joninda, a representative of the coalition, on September 1.
Tempo learned that Andika was allegedly beaten by police during the dispersal of protesters, leaving him with a fractured skull.
The news of his death was later confirmed by his family. "Yes, it's true, he has passed away," said Andika's older brother, Pangestu, on Tuesday, September 2.
Despite the tragic circumstances, Pangestu said the family has chosen to accept the loss. "The family has completely come to terms with everything," he said in a message.
