TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Japan's Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba, has announced his resignation as president of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Ishiba's resignation comes just weeks after the ruling coalition suffered a historic defeat in the July general election.
Ishiba's decision to step down on Sunday, September 7, 2025, came after initially resisting calls from within his party to resign following the election loss. He stated that he wanted to ensure that the tariff agreement reached with the United States is properly implemented.
"With Japan having signed the trade agreement and the [U.S.] president having signed the executive order, we have passed a key hurdle," Ishiba said as quoted by Al Jazeera. "I would like to pass the baton to the next generation."
Ishiba will continue to serve as prime minister until the party holds a general election to replace him as the LDP president. His resignation further complicates the political uncertainty that Japan, the world's fourth-largest economy, is currently facing.
Having taken office last October, the 68-year-old politician witnessed the election defeat that wiped out his coalition's majority in both houses of parliament. The defeat, triggered by voter concerns over rising living costs, made it increasingly difficult for Ishiba's government to implement its policy goals.
Amid Japan's growing political instability, most of Ishiba's right-wing opponents within his party urged him to resign. He was held responsible for the results of the House of Representatives election in July.
After announcing his resignation at a press conference on Sunday, September 7, 2025, Ishiba stated that he will begin the process of searching for his replacement.
