TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo estimated the total losses from mass protests across Indonesia at nearly Rp900 billion, with the highest figure in East Java. "The total cost across Indonesia, we calculated yesterday, is almost Rp900 billion," Dody said when met while inspecting the Pejompongan Toll Gate in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
Dody emphasized that the estimated infrastructure damage includes various facilities throughout Indonesia, including the burned Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) buildings, toll gates, bus stops, and others.
He estimated that the province with the highest losses was East Java, considering the number of infrastructure burned, including the Grahadi State Building, a cultural heritage site, the Kediri City DPRD Office, and others.
In addition to East Java, Dody also highlighted the damage in Makassar, South Sulawesi, related to the burning of the Makassar DPRD Office from Friday to Saturday, August 29-30, in the early hours of August 29-30. "I think the largest losses are in East Java and Makassar," Dody said.
In response to this situation, the Ministry of Public Works (PU) has prepared an emergency budget to support the repair of infrastructure damaged during the series of demonstrations. This budget allocation is in accordance with President Prabowo Subianto's directive and is guaranteed not to disrupt the president's other strategic programs. "We are using the emergency budget and our existing budget. Essentially, this is a true emergency response for us. The President's (Prabowo Subianto) directive is that this is an emergency response for PU," said Dody.
A wave of large-scale demonstrations took place in various cities across Indonesia following the death of Affan Kurniawan during a demonstration in Jakarta on Thursday (August 28, 2025). President Prabowo Subianto called for the public to remain calm and trust the government.
In several regions, such as Jakarta, East Java, and Makassar, there were acts of arson of public facilities such as toll gates, bus stops, government buildings, and cultural heritage sites.
