TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Director of Shipping and Maritime Affairs at the Ministry of Transportation, Hendri Ginting, said Indonesia's maritime sector is still vulnerable to cyberattacks. One potential attack is the hacking of digital systems such as Inapornet or the operational systems of ships and ports.

Cyber attacks can disrupt the operational systems of ships and port facilities. Hendri said, "The impact could be very serious, ranging from supply chain disruptions to damage to shipping company reputations. Therefore, vigilance and cross-agency coordination are absolutely necessary," as quoted from an official statement on Thursday, September 4, 2025, in Jakarta.

To support the prevention efforts, the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation and the U.S. Embassy held a workshop entitled  "Advanced Cybersecurity Readiness" from September 1-4, 2025. The agenda was attended by representatives from the Directorate General of Sea Transportation, the Indonesian National Police (Polri), the National Cyber and Cryptography Agency (BSSN), the Ministry of Communication and Digital, as well as several port facility providers in Indonesia.

Over the course of four days, workshop participants received training on best practices, innovative strategies, and practical steps to counter cyber threats, particularly in the maritime sector. The participants were directly trained by instructors from international maritime and cybersecurity agencies.

During one of the sessions, in his welcoming speech, Hendri expressed appreciation to the U.S. Embassy for facilitating the workshop. "Our hope is for future collaboration not only in capacity building, but also for benchmarking in the U.S., so that we can directly observe the implementation of maritime safety and security technologies there," he said.
