Indonesia Closely Monitors Citizens Amid Iran War

1 hour ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Immigration and Correction Agus Andrianto stated that his ministry has been conducting surveillance on its citizens affected by the war between Iran and the United States and its ally Israel.

He claimed that, based on the surveillance conducted by the Ministry of Immigration and Correction, no issues have been found, including in the efforts to repatriate Indonesian citizens to their homeland. "There are no complaints from Indonesian citizens abroad so far, and they can return to Indonesia smoothly," said Agus during a working meeting with the Commission XIII of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Thursday, April 2, 2026.

He mentioned that the issues that occurred in the repatriation of Indonesian citizens from the Middle East last month were related to route diversions and flight cancellations by airlines. However, it has been confirmed that the process has been running smoothly for the 29,025 foreign passengers and Indonesian citizens traveling to Indonesia via flights over the Middle East.

Furthermore, according to Agus, the Ministry of Immigration and Correction will prioritize monitoring Indonesian citizens who use fake documents to travel to other areas. "This surveillance is our priority," said Agus.

Previously, the Director General of Asia, the Pacific, and Africa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Santo Darmosumarto, stated that authorities in several Middle Eastern countries have requested that foreign nationals in their territories stay home and remain calm. "Governments in the Middle East do not recommend evacuation," said Santo in a press release broadcasted on the Foreign Ministry's YouTube channel on Friday, March 6, 2026.

He elaborated that currently, there are 519,412 Indonesian citizens in the Middle East, residing in countries affected by the war between Iran, the U.S., and Israel, including Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

The Acting Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heni Hamidah, affirmed that so far, no Indonesian citizens have been injured or directly affected by the ongoing armed conflict between the U.S. and Iran.

However, Indonesian citizens in Iran will be evacuated gradually. The first phase of evacuation will commence this week, with 32 Indonesian citizens being repatriated. They will be evacuated through Azerbaijan. "As for the subsequent evacuation plan, it will be decided by the Indonesian government after considering the most updated security aspects," said Heni in March 2026.
