China Offers Mediation in Thailand-Cambodia Border Dispute

18 hours ago 9

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government of China has offered to help resolve border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia. This offer came from Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during a meeting with Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa on the sidelines of the ASEAN Ministerial Conference in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, July 11, 2025.

"China is willing to uphold an objective and fair position and play a constructive role in promoting the peaceful coexistence between Thailand and Cambodia," Wang said, as reported by Anadolu.

He added that both nations are friends of China, expressing his hope that they can approach each other in good faith, resolve the dispute through friendly dialogue, and stabilize the situation as soon as possible.

Border Firefight Escalates Tensions

Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have escalated since May 28, following a brief exchange of fire in the disputed border area that resulted in the death of one Cambodian soldier. Both countries have since closed their border.

According to a report by the Bangkok Post, the incident occurred in the 820-kilometer disputed area along the Thai-Cambodian land border. In June, Cambodia formally requested the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to resolve the dispute.

As reported by Al Jazeera, the Thailand-Cambodia border dispute stems from the delimitation of an 820-kilometer border, largely drawn during the French occupation of Indochina from 1887–1954. Some sections of the border have not been officially demarcated and include ancient temple areas that have been contested for decades. The region has experienced sporadic violence since 2008, resulting in at least 28 deaths.

Separate Meeting with the Cambodian Foreign Minister

On the same day, Wang Yi also met with Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn. During their meeting, Wang reaffirmed China's neutral stance on the border issue and emphasized the importance of security cooperation in the region.

He called for stronger action to thoroughly eradicate transnational crimes such as online gambling, digital fraud, counterfeiting, and smuggling. Wang also addressed the tariffs imposed by the United States, expressing confidence that the Southeast Asian region is capable of navigating the complex situation to protect both shared and national interests.
