TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel has returned the bodies of 30 Palestinians to Gaza on Friday, October 31, 2025. Al Jazeera and France 24 reported that the return of the bodies is part of a swap agreement.
The bodies are of Palestinians who died while in Israeli custody. It is still unclear how they died.
The bodies were taken to the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis by the Red Cross after being handed over by Israel, the hospital said.
Under the ceasefire agreement, Israel will return the bodies of 15 Palestinians for each body of Israeli hostage who was returned by Hamas. The transfer of bodies on Friday brought the total returned to Gaza to 225.
The bodies were taken to Nasser by the Red Cross after being handed over by Israel, as in previous exchanges, the hospital said. According to the ceasefire plan on October 10, Hamas has repatriated 20 surviving hostages taken two years ago during their attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Israel has also started returning the bodies of 28 known hostages, a process that has been slow, angering Israeli citizens.
Hamas has returned 15 bodies identified as Israeli hostages and two foreign workers. Two of the bodies are of Thai and Nepali citizens, who were also captured in the October 7 attack.
Hamas has also returned some bodies of Israeli hostages that have been found, as well as unidentified bodies not listed among the 28 missing individuals.
There are 10 hostage bodies believed to still be in Gaza, plus one more missing since 2014. All are Israeli citizens, except for one Tanzanian and one Thai citizen.
The Israeli government has accused Hamas of violating the ceasefire agreement. The families of the hostages demand stronger action to force the Palestinian group to comply.
Hamas insists it is committed to the ceasefire plan but is struggling to find the dead due to two years of Israeli bombing that has devastated much of Gaza.
An Egyptian recovery team equipped with earth-moving equipment has joined the search effort for the bodies.
The repatriation of Palestinian bodies, through the International Red Cross Committee, occurs as Israeli forces continue to launch airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, despite the ceasefire still being unstable. The attacks killed at least three people on Friday.
A Palestinian was killed and his brother injured in an Israeli shooting in the Shujayea neighborhood in the east of Gaza City, while another was killed in an Israeli shooting in the Jabalia refugee camp, reported the Wafa news agency. A third Palestinian died from injuries sustained in previous Israeli shootings, it added.
Separately, civil defense workers in central Gaza said they have found the body of a Palestinian amidst the ruins of the Abu Medein family's house in the az-Zahra neighborhood.
Israeli fighter jets also attacked buildings in Khan Younis in southern Gaza on Friday.
