TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Some regions of Indonesia are entering the peak period of the rainy season starting today, November 1, 2025. Moving eastward, Indonesian regions will be seeing the peak of the rainy season until February 2026.

"The peak of the rainy season was not usually this long. It usually occurred from December to January or February," said the Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati in an online statement on Saturday afternoon, November 1, 2025.

Dwikorita explained that the peak of rainy season in the western part of Indonesia will occur in November-December, while in the central to eastern parts of Indonesia, in January-February next year.

An exception is given to the Papua and the northern part of the Sulawesi region, which are relatively uniform.

Furthermore, Dwikorita said December 2025 and January 2026 will be the main peak phase of the rainy season for most of Indonesian regions. "It's the ultimate peak," she said.

BMKG, said Dwikorita, stresses the importance of vigilance and preparedness during the rainy season, since there will be higher chances of extreme rainfall and hydrometeorological disasters during this period.

This potential is strengthened by the activation of the Asian monsoon winds that bring moist air from the north, as well as positive anomalies in sea surface temperatures in most of the Indonesian waters. "The anomalies range from 0.5-3.0 degrees Celsius warmer than the normal average."

In addition, BMKG also detected the presence of a weak La Niña phenomenon from November to December, and it is predicted to last until January-February 2026.

BMKG also emphasizes the importance of preparedness because from November to March-April, tropical cyclones usually form in the southern regions of Indonesia. This will prompt strong winds and heavy rain, especially in the southern coasts of Indonesia, such as Java, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, and the southern part of Maluku. "Phenomena like the Cyclone Seroja that occurred in early April 2021 will be seeing a higher chance of occurring," she said.
