TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has sought the help of Chinese President Xi Jinping to continue talks with North Korea. Meanwhile, Xi Jinping told Lee that he is willing to expand cooperation and jointly tackle the challenges.
Lee hosted Xi Jinping at a state summit and a dinner after the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in the city of Gyeongju, South Korea. This marks Xi Jinping's first visit to the U.S. ally in eleven years.
According to Xi Jinping, as reported by Al Arabiya, Beijing highly values its relationship with Seoul. China views South Korea as an indispensable partner for cooperation.
Lee has also pledged to strengthen relations with the U.S. ally without angering China and to seek to reduce tension with North Korea. "I am very positive about the situation in which conditions for engagement with North Korea are being formed," said Lee, referring to the recent high-level exchanges between China and North Korea.
"I also hope that South Korea and China will take advantage of these favorable conditions to strengthen strategic communication to resume dialogue with North Korea."
Lee has advocated for a phased approach to the denuclearization of North Korea, starting with engagement and freezing further nuclear weapon development. In a statement on Saturday, Pyongyang, a military and economic ally of China, rejected the denuclearization agenda as an unattainable "pipe dream."
