TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Previously nabbing several VMAs with her globally famous group BLACKPINK, Rosé now has one under her own belt. Collaborating with pop icon Bruno Mars, the New Zealand/South Korean singer incredulously took home the Moon Person for “APT.”—Song of the Year at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards.
The pop-punk delight was released on October 18, 2024, and quickly became a global smash, topping charts in more than 50 countries and peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. It's no surprise, then, that “APT.” was destined to sweep up the major award.
On Sunday, September 7, Rosé took the stage after Paris Hilton presented the award. She retrieved a neatly folded, thoughtful note, one she had written in advance, as she “didn’t want to mess this up, and I feel like this is a really big moment for myself and a lot of other people.”
Stumbling at first, laughing, and pausing, she eventually found her rhythm, opening up about her creative journey and her bond with Mars. “Thank you so much, Bruno. I can’t believe this. I’m gonna call you after, thank you so much for believing in me.”
Holding her first solo Moon Person, and with the crowd tuned in closely, Rosé then shared a deeply personal anecdote.
“Someone asked me the other day what my fear in life was and I was quite shocked at my own response. I had no idea how deeply personal this journey had been for me. I told them I feared that somewhere along this journey of pursuing my dreams I might hit a wall and possibly disappoint my 16-year-old self who grew up always an oddball among society, who wished someday she too could be herself and equally pursue her dreams like anyone else I saw on television.”
Rosé continued, “Twelve years later I dedicate this award to my 16-year-old self who dreamed and to all those who have watched me grow into the artist that I am today.” The crowd responded with applause, many visibly moved.
“Every single one of you has put me here…. Now I believe there is no imposter in the world when MTV has given me this award here at the VMAs.”
Rosé also took a moment to thank her team, label, BLACKPINK members, family, and “my loyal fans for believing in me.” And then, smiling and holding her “heavy” Moon Person, she added one final quote—this one from her therapist: “As my therapist tells me to do every day, I’d like to thank myself for not giving up, even in the toughest of times. Always remember you’ve got you.”
The win of “Apt.” is truly a significant one, standing out in a competitive Song of the Year category that included Alex Warren’s “Ordinary,” Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather,” Gracie Abrams’ “I Love You, I’m Sorry,” Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ “Die With a Smile,” and Tate McRae’s “Sports Car.,” as highlighted by RollingStone.
