TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chair of the Student Executive Board of the University of Indonesia (BEM UI), Zayyid Sulthan Rahman, said he would hold another street demonstration in the near future. However, he declined to elaborate on the details of the plan.
"However, we emphasize that we will hold constructive demonstrations and focus on policy changes. Soon, yes. The demonstration will be held soon. It will be within this week," Sulthan said on Tuesday, August 2, 2025.
Sulthan continued, saying the demonstration will be initiated by BEM UI itself. He could not yet estimate how many people would attend. Several demands are currently being formulated. They stated that they will also voice the 17+8 people's demands from influencers and various other elements of society.
"We have included that in our key demands for the upcoming demonstration," said the Chair of BEM FISIP UI, Nevanya Kayla Afi.
BEM UI and the faculty BEMs across UI issued five statements regarding the current situation. They condemned the repressive actions that have resulted in victims and strongly condemned the actions of the authorities.
First, demand full accountability from President Prabowo Subianto, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), and all members of the political elite for their arbitrary policies and statements, which are not in favor of the people and have worsened the national situation.
"To this day, we have not heard a sincere apology or a strong commitment to improve the situation," he said. "Furthermore, President Prabowo Subianto's statement regarding alleged treason must be proven through a clear, transparent, and accountable investigation."
Second, demand the release of all detained protesters and condemn repressive actions by the authorities, including arbitrary arrests, beatings, torture, and murder.
Third, reject the policy of suppressing information as stipulated in KPI letter No. 309/KPID-DKI/VIII/2025, as it constitutes a serious violation of press freedom and the public's right to know the truth.
"This systematic form of silencing is clearly visible through the restrictions on coverage and the disabling of live broadcasts on digital platforms to silence the people's voices," said the UI student.
Fourth, affirming the commitment of the University of Indonesia Student Family Association to continue monitoring, filtering, and disseminating objective information, siding with the truth, and rejecting all forms of disinformation and provocative propaganda aimed at intimidating and/or committing violent, destructive, or racist acts.
Fiveth, calling on all elements of society to maintain solidarity with #WargaJagaWarga and not be provoked by irresponsible parties who incite discord and lead to attacks on certain minority groups as fellow Indonesians.
"And we understand that students must take a stand, must make this not just a matter of chaos, but also a political force for all Indonesian society," said Atan after delivering a statement at the UI Makara Monument, across from the UI Faculty of Psychology, Depok, West Java, on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
