TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Since this morning, the Indonesian parliament complex located in Central Jakarta has been met with the usual noise of traffic. But a week earlier, the area was full of people, students and workers alike, raising their voices to protest the cancellation of fantastic allowances given to members of the House.
Based on Tempo's observations at the location on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. local time, there were no crowds of demonstrators in this area. But thousands of police and soldiers are standing guard with full gear around the complex that has been the focal point of recent waves of protests.
Jakarta Metro Police head of public relations, Inspector Ruslan Basuki, said there have been no reports of demonstrations in the parliament complex today.
"No plan for the House of Representatives in our plan of security action," Ruslan told Tempo via a short message on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
However, he continued, a total of 6,148 combined TNI-Polri personnel will not be withdrawn from the area to anticipate protests that may erupt without prior notice.
"Personnel are on standby for 24 hours," said Ruslan.
Meanwhile, dozens of trucks carrying TNI soldiers were seen around the parliament complex. Using a loudspeaker, they urged the public to help maintain security.
BEM SI Cancels Protest Plan
Earlier, the All-Indonesia Alliance of the Student Executive Board, or BEM SI, canceled a protest plan for today. The Coordinator of BEM SI, Muzammil Ihsan, said the group canceled the protest in consideration of the unfavorable situation.
Tempo has not yet received a response from Muzammil Ihsan regarding the complete reasons for the cancellation of the demonstration entitled 'Indonesia (C)emas.' As of the publication of this report, the message sent via the WhatsApp messaging application only showed two gray check marks, indicating that it was delivered.
Meanwhile, protests demanding the cancellation of the fantastic allowance for DPR members have been held since Monday, August 25, 2025. The movement escalated after a motorcycle taxi driver named Affan Kurniawan was killed by a tactical vehicle belonging to the police Mobile Brigade Corps on Thursday, August 28.
Affan's death triggered an escalation in demonstrations demanding transparent handling of the case and the resignation of the National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo. The problem is, this moment was exploited by unidentified groups to carry out vandalisms, from burning public facilities and the looting of several DPR members' homes.
The coordinator of the media division at BEM SI Kerakyatan Pasha Fazillah Apap admitted that this series of vandalism was the reason why BEM SI Kerakyatan did not hold demonstrations recently.
"But we ensure that BEM SI will return to the streets and voice our concerns once the situation is safer," said Pasha.
