TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Southern Sky Community in Bandung has provided tips for observing the total lunar eclipse on Sunday night, September 7, 2025, until early Monday morning, September 8. The phenomenon can be witnessed in Indonesia if the sky is clear and minimally cloudy. The total eclipse lasts for about 1 hour and 22 minutes out of the whole process, which takes 5 hours and 26 minutes.

Avivah Yamani, a member of the Southern Sky Community, stated that their community offers the opportunity to witness this rare phenomenon together, from a residential complex. "We have prepared regular telescopes and smart telescopes," she told Tempo on Sunday, September 7, 2025.

In general, the most vital tips for observing the eclipse are to find a dark and open location, unobstructed by trees and tall buildings. People should use a telescope or binoculars to see a more detailed view of the moon. There are also tips for documentation, using a professional camera and a tripod to capture the event, as well as with a smartphone.

Since it will occur from night to early morning, the Southern Sky Community suggests that people bring a jacket or warm clothing, snacks, and drinks if necessary. "It's necessary to bring a mat for observation," said Avivah.

Joint observations will also be conducted by the team from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) at the Geophysics Station office in Bandung. The Bosscha Observatory will also observe the eclipse while networking with 22 observation points in various areas, starting from Aceh, Kupang, Maumere, Malang, Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Lampung, as well as Singapore.

According to the BMKG, the total lunar eclipse phase consists of seven stages. When monitored within the time reference of the western part of Indonesia, it begins with the penumbral eclipse starting at 10:26 PM Western Indonesia Time (WIB), followed by the partial eclipse an hour later, starting at 11:26 PM WIB on Sunday, September 7.

The next phase is the total eclipse, which will occur at 12:37 AM WIB. The total lunar eclipse will reach its peak at 1:11 AM on Monday. The total eclipse ends at 01:53 AM, and the partial eclipse also ends at 02:56 AM WIB. Finally, there is a penumbral eclipse at 03:56 AM WIB.

During the peak of the eclipse, the Moon will appear red if the sky is clear. The red color on the Moon is caused by the scattering of sunlight that is refracted in the atmosphere, also known as Rayleigh scattering.
