TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The funeral ceremony for Pope Francis took place at the Vatican at 10:00 AM local time or 03:00 PM Western Indonesian Time.The highest leader of the Catholic Church passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025.
As reported by CBS News, the Vatican stated that around 250,000 people attended the funeral ceremony for Pope Francis in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican, before the late highest leader of the Catholic Church was taken to the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome for burial.
The Mass was held with great solemnity. The crowd that filled St. Peter's Square observed the ceremony mostly in silence, breaking it only to sing, join in prayer, and later applaud as the coffin of Francis appeared.
At the conclusion of the two-hour service, the simple coffin was returned to the basilica one last time. It was then carried in a procession across the Tiber River to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome for burial, passing notable tourist landmarks such as the ancient Colosseum along the way.
Beyond the 250,000 people gathered at St. Peter’s Square, another 150,000 lined the six-kilometer route stretching from Vatican City through Rome to Francis’ final resting place.
Light applause was heard, some mourners wept while waving at the funeral car, and many held up their mobile phones before a respectful silence settled over the crowd.
The mourning period following Pope Francis' death is set to last nine days, from April 26 to May 4, 2025. Throughout this time, several Vatican attractions, including the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, will remain closed to the public.
Nevertheless, visitors can still explore other significant religious sites in Rome, such as the Basilica of St. John Lateran, Santa Maria Maggiore, and St. Paul Outside the Walls. These locations carry deep historical and spiritual meaning and are vital parts of Catholic tradition.
Following the funeral, the College of Cardinals will gather to elect a new pope, according to CNN. The conclave is not expected to commence earlier than 15 days after Pope Francis' passing, with proceedings anticipated to begin around May 6.
During the conclave, the cardinals will be secluded within the Sistine Chapel, while the public waits for the traditional signal of white smoke announcing the election of a new pope. Tourists hoping to witness this momentous occasion are advised to plan ahead due to large crowds and tightened security measures.
