TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Foreign Minister of the Republic of China (ROC), or Taiwan, Lin Chia-lung, has urged the international community to cooperate with Taiwan for global peace and prosperity. He made the statement ahead of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, which will take place from Tuesday, September 9 to September 30, 2025.
Lin highlighted the increasing global uncertainty due to prolonged conflicts, democratic setbacks, and the spread of disinformation.
"Authoritarian regimes are increasingly using gray-zone tactics to undermine the rules-based international order," he said, based on a press release received by Tempo on Monday, September 8, 2025.
Taiwan in the Indo-Pacific
According to Lin, Taiwan is at the forefront of the first island chain in the Indo-Pacific and serves as a bulwark against authoritarian expansion. In addition to its strategic position, Taiwan is said to play a major role in maintaining regional stability through its robust economy and semiconductor ecosystem. "As the 21st largest economy in the world, Taiwan produces more than 60 percent of the world's chips and 90 percent of the most advanced chips," he said.
Lin emphasized Taiwan's commitment to upholding democratic values, both domestically and internationally. He referred to the Four Pillars of Peace launched by President Lai Ching-te last year, which include increasing defense budgets and societal resilience.
"Taiwan is not seeking conflict with China, but is urging Beijing to continue dialogue based on equality and dignity," he said.
Additionally, Taiwan advocates for a Coordinated Diplomacy strategy that combines diplomatic, defense, technological, and economic strengths. Lin stated that these efforts aim to expand Taiwan's international role while creating a stable and prosperous world.
Lin outlined several partnerships with partner countries. Taiwan is assisting Paraguay in developing an integrated hospital information system, partnering with Eswatini to build oil reserve facilities, and supporting Palau to become a smart and sustainable archipelagic state.
"Taiwan is strengthening partnerships with democracies facing geopolitical risks to counter authoritarian influence, advance human rights, improve digital governance, and uphold the rules-based international order," he said.
Criticism of the UN
Despite contributing to various fields, Taiwan remains excluded from the UN system. Lin believes this is due to a misinterpretation of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758. "The resolution does not state that Taiwan is a part of the Republic of China, nor does it give the ROC the right to represent Taiwan in the UN system," he said.
However, he believes the UN still succumbs to political pressure from Beijing and uses the resolution as a basis to exclude Taiwan.
According to Lin, this attitude contradicts the UN principle of "not leaving anyone behind". Lin also mentioned the growing international support for Taiwan.
Countries in bilateral and multilateral forums, including the G7, have emphasized the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Executive and legislative bodies in various countries have also stated that Resolution 2758 does not determine Taiwan's status or prohibit its participation in international organizations. "Taiwan invites the world to chip in with Taiwan, recognizing Taiwan's role and contributions on the global stage," said Lin.
