TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The film Pangku marks a major milestone for Reza Rahadian, who steps into the director’s chair for the first time.
Long celebrated as one of Indonesia’s leading actors, Reza now proves his ability to steer a production from behind the camera. His direction not only reflects technical precision but also a deep attention to story and character, bringing every detail of the film to life.
Firm Yet Warm on Set
The cast members note that Reza brings a fresh energy to the set. Fedi Nuril, who plays Hadi, describes him as a director with a clear vision. “He knows exactly what he wants to achieve in every scene,” said Fedi. “Sometimes he can appear stern, but it’s always clear direction.”
Claresta Taufan, who portrays Sartika, agrees, adding that Reza’s firmness is rooted in care for his colleagues.
“He is firm because he cares about the people involved in this work,” she said. Despite his firmness, the atmosphere remained warm, as Reza often lightened the mood with humor. The cast agrees that this combination of firmness, care, and warmth made the production both intense and enjoyable.
For Reza, this debut is both a responsibility and a learning process. He admits the challenge of directing is very different from acting. “As a director, I have to think about the film as a whole,” he said. “What matters most to me is to create good work sincerely, together with friends. That’s the main thing.”
Expressing gratitude for his first directorial effort, Reza added, “I’m just grateful this film finally came to life. I believe good work is work that happens.”
Warm International Reception
Pangku has already gained recognition on the global stage. The film was selected for the 23rd Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF), included in the HAF Goes to Cannes program, showcased at the Cannes Film Market and Cannes Film Festival 2025, and received backing from the Red Sea Film Foundation.
The success continues with Pangku’s selection to compete at the 2025 Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), running from September 17–26, in the First or Second Time Director awards category.
Producer Gita Fara described the achievement as a proud moment. “It’s wonderful that this debut has been warmly received at home and abroad. The support for Pangku has been extraordinary,” she said.
Reza insists that his goal was never about chasing festivals but simply making a good film.
“I didn’t make this film for festival A, B, or C. I just wanted to make something meaningful with friends. When platforms or festivals respond positively, I can only be grateful,” he said.
He added that the recognition at BIFF is not only for the film but also for the nation.
“The pride isn’t just for Pangku, but for Indonesia. When the film is called Pangku Indonesia, the word ‘Indonesia’ is what matters most,” Reza emphasized.
