TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pope Leo XIV held his first meeting with cardinals from around the world since being elected as the head of the Catholic Church. He identified AI as one of the most crucial issues facing humankind.
Pope Leo XIV is the first American pope. He outlined his papacy vision in the Vatican on Saturday, May 10, 2025, with the cardinals who elected him. He said AI challenges human dignity, justice, and employment. This view is consistent with his predecessor, the late Pope Francis.
Regarding his choice of name, he said he identifies with the late Leo XIII, who defended workers' rights during his papacy from 1878-1903 at the beginning of the industrial era. He added that social teachings are now needed to respond to the modern revolution brought about by AI.
The late Pope Francis, who passed away last month, warned that AI risks turning human relationships into mere algorithms. Francis called for an international agreement to regulate it.
Francis warned the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized nations last year that AI must remain centered on humans. So decisions about when to use weapons or even less lethal devices will not fall into the hands of machines.
In his speech delivered in Italian, Pope Leo XIV repeatedly referred to Francis and expressed condolences for his death. He said the late Pope Francis left a valuable legacy and hinted that he would continue his vision.
On Saturday, Pope Leo XIV made an impromptu visit to a sacred place in southern Rome dedicated to the Madonna and crucial to the Augustinian order. People gathered in the town of Genazzano, in the square outside the main church, which serves as the sanctuary of Madre del Buon Consiglio, waiting for Leo to appear. The Pope shook hands and blessed some among the crowd before entering the sacred place.
Leo had previously visited the sacred place, managed by Augustinian monks, last year when he was still a cardinal. The place has been a pilgrimage site since the 15th century.
