TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Eye healthcare services for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are reportedly on the brink of collapse due to Israel's 18-month-long genocide. Medical sources in Gaza, as reported by The Palestine Chronicle on Sunday, have documented at least 1,500 Palestinians blinded and an additional 4,000 at risk of losing their sight.
Local doctors report that Israel's ongoing assaults and bombardments have severely disrupted hospital surgical services, particularly for conditions such as retinal diseases, diabetic retinopathy, and trauma-related internal bleeding.
Dr. Abdelsalam Sabah, Director of the Gaza Eye Hospital, described the situation as being in "an almost total collapse." He stated that surgeries for critical eye conditions, including retinal diseases, diabetic retinopathy, and internal bleeding, have nearly stopped.
“The health sector is facing a critical shortage of consumables and medical equipment necessary for eye surgeries, which is leading to an almost total collapse of surgical services,” Dr. Sabah stated.
The Gaza City Eye Hospital, a primary facility for eye surgeries in the Palestinian enclave, has been forced to reuse essential surgical instruments, such as surgical scissors, repeatedly. This dire situation increases the risk to patients.
Crucial medications, including hyaluronic acid and surgical thread, are nearly depleted, and numerous individuals with eye injuries resulting from Israeli bombings urgently require these medical supplies.
Medical staff warn that without these medications, treatment is impossible, emphasizing that immediate international intervention to provide emergency supplies and equipment is crucial. Without it, hospitals will be unable to perform any eye surgeries.
The Gaza Health Ministry has further cautioned that the shortage of medical supplies in Gaza has reached a dangerously low level.
According to their latest statement, 64 percent of medical consumables have been completely exhausted, and the supply of critical medications has dwindled to only 57 percent, a 6 percent decrease since last month.
Gaza hospitals are struggling to maintain operations in emergency rooms, ICUs, and operating theaters with rapidly diminishing supplies, while the number of critically injured patients continues to rise. Patients suffering from kidney failure, cancer, heart conditions, and other chronic illnesses are among the most severely affected.
The Gaza Ministry has warned that if Israel's restrictions on medical aid entering Gaza persist, many healthcare services may be forced to cease operations entirely.
