TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Azkarana Rectaversa Almadira, a 11th grade student from SMA Negeri 1 Sidoarjo (SMANISDA), will represent Indonesia in the Asia Girls Campaign organized by The Garden of Hope (GOH) Foundation in Taiwan in July 2025.
Rana, as she is commonly known, was chosen after passing a rigorous selection process participated by hundreds of students from various Asian countries. She will join ten other young individuals to share and learn in a program focusing on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) issues.
"The Asian Girls Campaign is like a scholarship for young women from all over Asia. It is related to projects associated with SDGs," said Rana, in an official statement quoted on Sunday, April 27, 2025.
In the competition, Rana is promoting a program for empowering street children in Surabaya through a literacy movement. She has proposed a collaboration with the 'Save Street Child Surabaya' community, which focuses on accompanying street children.
Rana stated that the program arose from her concern about the educational disparity experienced by marginalized children. She created a detailed proposal emphasizing the importance of improving the basic literacy skills of street children, not only in reading, but also in understanding the content through two-way discussions.
"Because I feel that their literacy limitations are not only in the form of books, but also support to enhance their ability to understand readings, such as finding protagonists, antagonists, and drawing conclusions," she said.
The 17-year-old girl emphasizes the importance of program sustainability. She plans to implement the pentahelix collaboration method-involving the government, business world, communities, media, and universities-to strengthen the long-term impact of literacy for street children.
"Literacy is not something that can be measured in a year or two. Its impact is long-term, so it must be done regularly," said Rana.
After undergoing a week-long training in Taiwan in July, Rana plans to launch this literacy program more intensively in August 2025.
The head of SMANISDA, Eko Redjo, joyfully welcomes the achievements of his students. He ensures that the school will continue to provide support, from mentoring to expanding networks.
"We are very grateful because for two consecutive years, SMANISDA has qualified for the Asia Girls Campaign. Previously, there was an issue about the environment, and now it's about teenage social problems," he said.
Eko hopes that in the future, more SMANISDA students will excel at the international level. "Aside from being beneficial to society, it also serves as an inspiration for their younger classmates," he said.
