TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the safety of all Indonesian citizens in Iran following the port explosion in Bandar Abbas. No Indonesians were victims of the incident.
Rollyansyah Soemirat, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, conveyed in a written statement released in Jakarta on Sunday, April 27, 2025, that the 385 Indonesian citizens currently in Iran are all safe. He further clarified that none of these individuals reside in Bandar Abbas.
The statement further clarified, "The majority of students live in Qom, while many other Indonesian citizens reside in Tehran, the capital."
The spokesperson also noted that two Indonesian crew members who worked on ships in Bandar Abbas last year have since returned to Indonesia.
The Indonesian Embassy in Tehran is coordinating with Iranian authorities and the Indonesian community across Iran to ensure their continued safety and will regularly monitor their well-being.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also advises Indonesian citizens requiring assistance to contact the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran's hotline at +989024668889.
The explosion at the Shahid Rajaee port in Bandar Abbas on Saturday tragically resulted in 25 deaths and at least 1,139 injuries. Initial reports suggest the explosion was caused by chemical substances from a gas tank or a solid-fuel missile.
Bandar Abbas, a significant port city in southern Hormozgan province bordering Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is situated approximately 15 kilometers southwest of the Bandar Abbas Port on the northern coast of the Strait of Hormuz.
Eyewitness accounts and local reports indicate that a small fire rapidly escalated, triggering the explosion due to high air temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius and the presence of flammable materials.
