TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Defense received a visit from the Chief of the Australian Army, Lieutenant General Simon Stuart, in Jakarta on Monday, September 8, 2025. Simon was welcomed by Deputy Minister of Defense Air Marshal (Ret.) Donny Ermawan Taufanto, along with several officials of the Ministry of Defense.
The Head of the Defense Information Bureau, Brigadier General Frega Wenas Inkiriwang, said the meeting reaffirmed the commitment of the two countries to enhance defense cooperation that has been established thus far.
"The main topics of discussion included the continuation of bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Australia, ranging from education, personnel exchange, to joint military exercises," said Frega when met at the Ministry of Defense on Monday, September 8, 2025.
Australia is offering postgraduate education opportunities for TNI (Indonesian National Armed Forces) officers, including in the fields of strategic studies and terrorism. "Not only to enrich knowledge, but also to strengthen people-to-people contact starting from the cadet level," he said.
The meeting also discussed the continuity of joint exercises. In recent years, Indonesia and Australia have regularly participated in the multilateral exercise Super Garuda Shield held in Indonesia, in addition to bilateral exercises between the two armies.
Frega added that besides discussing routine programs, Stuart also mentioned the possibility of expanding cooperation, especially at the level of special operations units. "This marks the trust of both countries to develop exercises at a more technical level," said Frega.
Although Simon Stuart was present in his capacity as Chief of the Army, the Ministry of Defense stated that the agenda aligns with the defense diplomacy outlined at the ministerial level. Some time ago, Indonesia and Australia held a meeting of their respective defense and foreign ministers, followed by a defense ministerial meeting.
After leaving the Ministry of Defense, Simon Stuart is scheduled to meet with the TNI Commander to discuss the follow-up on cooperation. "The Ministry of Defense hopes that all of these commitments can materialize concretely in the field, whether in the form of exercises, education, or personnel exchange," said Frega.
