TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin stated that he has not been informed about the plan to purchase the main defense equipment, the Black Hawk helicopter, from the United States. He mentioned that the Ministry of Defense, as an institution, will comply with existing regulations, including the president's decision and the evaluation results conducted by the TNI (Indonesian Military).
"Regarding this matter, I will ask the TNI Commander about the evaluation results first," said Sjafrie at the Ministry of Defense office on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
Meanwhile, TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto stated that as the user, his institution will follow the policies applied by the Ministry of Defense in the procurement of Black Hawk helicopters. "The important thing is we accept, we are just the user," said Agus.
The plan to purchase Sikorsky S-70M Black Hawk helicopters from the United States is outlined in the cooperation agreement executed by the Director of PT Dirgantara Indonesia and the Vice President of Global Business Development at Sikorsky in August 2023.
At that time, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto and Deputy Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Rosan Roeslani also witnessed the signing of the Head of Agreement.
Indonesia is planning to have 24 units of Black Hawk helicopters with a carrying capacity of 10,350 lbs or 4,695 kg, as well as an external carrying capacity of 9,000 lbs or 4,082 kg.
The equipment used by the United States Army experienced a serious incident in January 2025. At that time, the Black Hawk helicopter was involved in a collision incident with an American Airlines aircraft near Ronald Reagan Airport, Washington DC.
