TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former President Joko Widodo or Jokowi has spoken out after being linked to the alleged corruption case involving the 2024 Hajj quota, currently under investigation by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). Jokowi did not deny that ministerial work programs derive from presidential policies and directives.
He acknowledged that his name surfaced in the investigation regarding the Hajj quota. "Yes, in every case, my name is always implicated. Because whatever the ministers' work programs are, they undoubtedly stem from the president's policies, commands, and directives," Jokowi said at his residence in Sumber, Solo, on Friday, January 30, 2026.
Jokowi stated he never issued orders for illicit acts. "But there are no orders, there are no directives for corruption, none," he said briefly.
In this case, the KPK has named former Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas and his former special staff, Ishfah Abidal Aziz, as suspects.
Yaqut responded to a KPK summons today, appearing as a witness in his capacity as the Minister of Religious Affairs for the 2020–2024 term. "I was summoned to provide testimony related to the Hajj quota case," Yaqut said upon arriving at the KPK Merah Putih Building.
KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo confirmed the summons. He stated the examination aimed to investigate the flow of funds and the Hajj quota distribution mechanism. "The person in question was examined as a witness," Budi said.
Previously, KPK Acting Deputy for Enforcement Asep Guntur Rahayu mentioned that the alleged corruption involved a hierarchical money collection practice within the Ministry of Religious Affairs. "At the ministry, ultimately it leads to the minister," Asep stated in September 2025.
As the case develops, the KPK has seized assets suspected to be proceeds of corruption, including two houses owned by civil servants in the Directorate General of Hajj and Umrah valued at approximately Rp6.5 billion.
Regarding presidential communication with Saudi Arabia, Minister of Youth and Sports Dito Ariotedjo stated no specific discussion on the Hajj quota occurred during the 2023 bilateral visit. He noted the visit focused primarily on sports cooperation.
However, Dito admitted the Hajj issue was briefly mentioned by Jokowi alongside other agendas, such as investment and the development of the new national capital.
