TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Yuliot Tanjung, is optimistic that a new hydrogen-based geothermal power plant (PLTP) will significantly advance the global energy transition.
"Green hydrogen is believed to become a game changer in the global energy transition due to its flexibility and potential as a future export commodity," Yuliot said in a press release on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.
This proclamation followed Yuliot's participation in the groundbreaking ceremony for the hydrogen-based PLTP project in Ulubelu, Lampung, which took place on the same day. He was joined by Todotua Pasaribu, Deputy Minister of Investment and Empowerment/BKPM, as well as leadership from PT Pertamina (Persero) and PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk.
The Ulubelu facility is being developed as an integrated clean energy laboratory, featuring four geothermal units with a total capacity of 220 MW. The entire operation will adhere to the rigorous Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) standards of the Pertamina Group and will be overseen by the government.
According to Yuliot, these measures ensure that the project is both safe and environmentally sound. He noted that the experience and best practices gained from this initiative will be a model for similar projects across Indonesia.
"The project also serves as a commercial feasibility test, including production costs, technological efficiency, and business models," he added.
Yuliot explained that Ulubelu was selected for its existing geothermal infrastructure, stable electricity grid, cooling towers, and its proximity to the crucial Sumatra-Java distribution line. These factors make it an ideal testbed for integrating hydrogen into the national energy network and industrial market.
Pertamina Highlights Project's Significance
Simon Aloysius Mantiri, President Director of Pertamina, characterized the project as a historic milestone for Indonesia's energy sector. "This demonstrates that energy transition can be realized by relying on clean energy from our own country," he remarked in the press release.
Simon expressed hope that the new facility will not only bolster the nation's clean energy portfolio but also provide tangible benefits to local communities. "This Green Hydrogen Plant must become a symbol of our nation's progress," he concluded.
