TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Only three Indonesian representatives have advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Open 2025: men's singles player Alwi Farhan and the two men's doubles pairs, Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani. The remaining seven representatives who competed in the Round of 16 on Thursday, October 23, 2025, were eliminated from the BWF Super 750 tournament.
Alwi Farhan is the sole remaining Indonesian player in the men's singles category. The 20-year-old secured his quarterfinal spot by defeating Ireland's Nhat Nguyen in a fierce, three-game match at the Glaz Arena, France. Alwi recovered from a first-game loss to win, 16-21, 21-12, 21-17, after playing for 1 hour and 37 minutes. This victory evened their head-to-head record at 1-1, avenging a prior loss to Nguyen at the Thailand Masters 2025 quarterfinals.
Alwi expressed his relief and gratitude for the win, admitting he faced difficulties on court but adjusted his strategy quickly.
"Like before, I was able to control my thinking on the court. I overcame the difficulties, and when my opponent started to catch up near the end of the match, I quickly switched tactics and took control," Alwi said, as quoted by the PBSI media team.
Meanwhile, two of Alwi's senior players were stopped short. Jonatan Christie, who came to France having just won the Korea Open 2025 and the Denmark Open 2025, was eliminated by Japan's Koki Watanabe. The three-game duel ended 21-11, 19-21, 23-25 after 1 hour and 20 minutes, marking Jonatan's first defeat against Watanabe in their three career meetings.
Anthony Sinisuka Ginting also failed to advance, succumbing to Chi Yu Jen of Taiwan. Ginting initially showed promise, winning the first game and taking a 7-1 lead early in the second. However, Chi Yu Jen mounted a fierce comeback to take the last two games, winning 21-14, 23-25, 15-21 in 1 hour and 19 minutes.
In men's doubles, the seeded pair Fajar / Fikri advanced after eliminating the Danish duo Daniel Lundgaard/Mads Vestergaard in straight games, 21-14, 21-16. This marked their second victory over the Danish pair, following their win at the Denmark Open last week.
The non-seeded pair, Sabar / Reza, also secured a quarterfinal berth by defeating compatriots Muhammad Rian Ardianto/Rahmat Hidayat in a quick 30-minute match, 21-12, 21-13.
The sole mixed doubles pair, Jafar Hidayatullah/Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu, was defeated by the third seed, Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Supissara Paewsampran of Thailand, 19-21, 17-21. This was their second loss to the Thai duo. Felisha reflected positively on their effort despite the loss:
"Even though we lost, we feel we played with more confidence today. We slowly want to return to the very good performance we had a few months ago," she stated.
Finally, all three women's doubles pairs were eliminated. They are Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma/Meilysa Trias Puspitasari, Rachel Allessya Rose/Febi Setianingrum, and Lanny Tria Mayasari/Amallia Cahaya Pratiwi.
