TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Protests in Nepal turned violent on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, leading to the death of Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, the wife of former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal. According to NDTV, demonstrators besieged and set fire to the couple’s residence in the Dallu area of Kathmandu.
Chitrakar was rushed to Kirtipur Burns Hospital but did not survive her injuries. On the same day, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli announced his resignation after his own home was also set ablaze.
The unrest has plunged Nepal into political crisis. Prime Minister Khadga Prasad (KP) Sharma Oli, whose home was also torched, announced his resignation on Tuesday. The decision came amid mounting criticism over the government’s corruption scandals and its unpopular move to block social media platforms.
The protests, known as the “Gen Z Protests,” erupted after the government blocked Facebook, X, YouTube, and other platforms, citing the companies’ failure to comply with registration rules.
Anger over the restrictions, combined with longstanding frustrations about corruption and inequality, drove young Nepalis to the streets.
Although the social media ban was lifted on Monday night, demonstrations only intensified. Protesters set fire to the homes of several top leaders as well as Nepal’s parliamentary building. The main airport in Kathmandu was forced to close, while military helicopters evacuated several ministers to safety.
Police responded with gunfire, leaving at least 22 demonstrators dead. The violence further fueled public anger, particularly among young people who say they are tired of a political system that benefits “nepo kids,” the children of elites who enjoy wealth and privileges while most of the country’s youth face joblessness and economic hardship.
Regional Fallout
As the crisis deepened, India issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to postpone trips to Nepal until stability returns. Several airlines, including Air India, IndiGo, and Nepal Airlines, canceled flights between Delhi and Kathmandu on Tuesday.
The protests, which began over digital rights, have now grown into a larger movement against corruption and entrenched privilege within Nepal’s ruling class, leaving the country at a dangerous crossroads.
