TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Meeting with President Prabowo Subianto alongside the members of Gerakan Nurani Bangsa, (National Conscience Movement or GNB), Laode Muhammad Syarif did not waste the opportunity. Although the GNB had already submitted a formal letter of recommendation, Laode handed Prabowo another document titled Recommendations for Priority Agenda on Accelerating Legal Reform during their meeting at the State Palace on September 11, 2025.
The former Deputy Chair of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) also gave a copy of the same document to State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi. The file contained 150 recommendations on legal reforms, including proposals for the National Police (Polri) and the Attorney General’s Office (AGO). “The report contains many points about legal reform,” Laode told Tempo on Wednesday, October 15.
The document was originally compiled under the previous administration in 2023 by the Legal Reform Acceleration Team led by Mohammad Mahfud Md., who then served as Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs. Laode served as deputy chair. The team involved dozens of academics and practitioners.
According to Laode, the report also discussed reforms in law enforcement within both Polri and the AGO. He believes the report remains relevant today, especially amid recent public outrage and declining trust in the police following the death of online motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan.
