WHO: US$7 Billion Required to Rebuild Gaza's Health Services

TEMPO.COJakarta - Rebuilding the healthcare system in Gaza, Palestine, requires at least US$7 billion, or approximately Rp116.3 trillion, according to the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Speaking on Thursday, as reported by Antara, Tedros stated that none of Gaza's hospitals are functioning normally, with only 14 facilities still operational. Gaza continues to face a critical shortage of medicines, medical equipment, and healthcare workers.

He urged other countries to be more proactive in receiving patients from Gaza who desperately need medical treatment.

According to the WHO, about 15,000 Palestinians in Gaza still require medical evacuation, including 4,000 children. Tragically, 700 people have died while awaiting the evacuation process.

The Palestinian health authorities estimate that the death toll from Israel's military actions in Gaza over the past two years has reached more than 67,000 people, with almost a third of the victims being children.

Humanitarian Assistance and Rafah Crossing

As quoted by Asiaone, Tedros called for the reopening of the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt, where a massive backlog of aid and patients awaiting transfer is currently held.

Patient transfers slowed dramatically after Israel took control of the Rafah crossing and closed it in May 2024. Since the previous ceasefire ended in March, fewer than four patients have managed to leave Gaza per day.

WHO also noted that while the food situation in Gaza has slightly improved during the current ceasefire, much greater efforts are needed to reverse the crisis, with over 600,000 people still facing extremely severe food insecurity.

Ceasefire Developments

On September 29, Trump proposed a peace plan, which included 20 points calling for an immediate ceasefire on the condition that hostages be released within 72 hours.

The plan also stipulated that Hamas or other armed Palestinian groups should not be included in the new government in Gaza, with control of the territory to be handed over to a technocratic committee overseen by a Trump-led international body.

The subsequent timeline saw rapid diplomatic movement: October 9: Israel and Hamas reached an agreement to implement the first stage of the plan to end the two-year armed conflict in Gaza.

On October 13, Trump, alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, signed a formal ceasefire declaration in the Palestinian enclave.

The agreement mandated that Hamas release 20 Israeli hostages who were still alive and held in Gaza since October 7, 2023. In exchange, Israel agreed to release 1,718 Palestinian prisoners from Gaza and 250 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons.
