Two Sumatran Tiger Cubs Born in Barumun Sanctuary, Symbolize Hope for Conservation

3 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni revealed that the naming of two Sumatran tiger cubs born on January 26 carries special significance, with the names Nunuk and Ninik symbolizing renewed hope for wildlife conservation in Indonesia.

“It serves as inspiration for the broader public to care more about wildlife preservation,” he said in a written statement quoted on Sunday, May 4, 2025.

The cubs, a male and a female, were born to a tigress named Gadis and a tiger named Monang at the Barumun Wildlife Sanctuary in Padang Lawas Regency, North Sumatra.

The sanctuary keepers were initially unaware of the presence of these small carnivores. They later heard the sound of tiger cubs from inside Gadis' cage.

Prior to being paired, Gadis had been caught in the Mandailing Natal Regency in November 2015. Her left front leg had to be amputated due to severe injuries.

Gadis was then transferred to the Barumun Wildlife Sanctuary on November 23, 2016. Her partner, Monang, had also been caught in a trap near Dolok Paribuan District, Simalungun Regency. He was evacuated to the same place as Gadis on May 4, 2017.

Nunuk and Ninik are the third offspring of the tiger couple Gadis-Monang. They previously had offspring named Surya Menggala and Citra Kartini, which were released into Kerinci Seblat National Park on June 8, 2022. The couple's other offspring, named Bisma and Albanta, are still in the Barumun enclosure.

The Barumun Wildlife Sanctuary operates under the Decree of the Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation No. SK.373/KSDAE/SET/KSA.29/2016.

It functions as a refuge for Sumatran tigers that have been involved in human-wildlife conflicts.

Managed by the North Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Center and supported by the Bodhicitta Mandala Medan Foundation, the sanctuary implements a semi-wild care approach.
