TEMPO.CO, JakartaApart from Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, travelers can start their first journey to Japan by visiting Fukuoka. The city offers a more authentic side of Japan, a relaxed atmosphere, delicious food, and a rich culture. Besides, it is also easily accessible from other major cities in Japan.

Located on the northern coast of Kyushu, Fukuoka is the fifth-largest city in Japan. As reported by Japan.travel, the city is loosely divided into two halves, Hakata and Tenjin, with the Nakasu Island in between. These two cities merged in 1889 to form the modern city of Fukuoka.

Today, Hakata has developed into the business center of Fukuoka and serves as the final stop for the bullet train from Kyoto. The Tenjin area is the cultural hub, while Nakasu is the lively and bustling part of the city as night falls.

The best times to visit Fukuoka are during spring and fall, when the autumn leaves and cherry blossoms are in full bloom. These two seasons are busier, so flight tickets and hotel prices are usually higher.

But if you’re seeking a crowd-free vacation, visit Fukuoka during summer or winter. Despite the more extreme end of the weather, tourists can enjoy events and festivals such as Christmas illuminations, Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival, Fukuoka Fireworks Festival, and the Oniyo Fire Festival.

Must-Visit Iconic Landmarks in Fukuoka

For those interested in visiting Fukuoka, here are some tourist spots worth visiting. These include landmarks such as the well-known Hakozaki Shrine, a Shinto shrine that boasts impressive architecture and a tranquil atmosphere. There is no entrance fee, and it is open to visitors throughout the week, as reported by Travel and Leisure Asia.

Meanwhile, the Ukiha Inari Shrine on the hillside features around 100 torii gates spread across the mountain. The steps are wide enough, making it an easier climb. For those interested in history, a visit to the Tochoji Temple is a must. It is home to one of the largest wooden Buddha statues in Japan.

Other iconic landmarks include the Fukuoka City Museum, a place to learn about the rich history and culture of the city. The museum displays a collection of precious relics, artifacts, and traditional musical instruments. For art enthusiasts, the Fukuoka Art Museum offers a collection of around 16,000 works of art. Visitors can explore works by renowned artists including Yayoi Kusama, Salvador Dalí, and Andy Warhol.

Don't miss out on visiting another iconic landmark, the Fukuoka Tower. This 123-meter-high tower offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Hakata Bay and the city of Fukuoka from its vantage point.

Tourist Attractions in Fukuoka

In addition to the iconic landmarks, tourists can visit several attractions, such as the Fukuoka Castle Ruins. The castle offers visitors a glimpse into Japan's feudal past. Built between 1601 and 1607 by Kuroda Nagamasa, it stands as an important part of Japan's feudal history.

For family trips, Marine World is a suitable destination. This aquarium park highlights the marine life of the Kyushu region. There are about 20,000 fish and 350 different species in the aquarium. Tourists can enjoy dolphin and sea lion shows at specific times throughout the day.

If you want to enjoy a different atmosphere, you can visit Nokonoshima Island, located in Hakata Bay and only a 10-minute ferry ride from Meinohama Port in Fukuoka City. Tourists can enjoy an amazing array of flowers, sandy beaches, and beautiful natural scenery.

For party enthusiasts, there is Nakasu Island, famous for its lively nightlife. This area combines traditional Japanese culture with modern entertainment.
